Community Programs

The Sky is the Limit!
We are just beginning to develop what will be a rich diversity of programs for the entire community. Here are highlights of just two, the YMCA-on-Wheels and the Lee Pesky Learning Center. You can also suggest a program idea online! All YMCA programs will incorporate the 40 Developmental Assets Curriculum and the YMCA's four character values.

YMCA-on-Wheels
Today it is harder than ever for young families to make ends meet, let alone provide their children with opportunities for after school activities and academic support. Many children in our neighborhoods come home to empty houses in unsupervised neighborhoods every day because their parents are working. Sadly this presents children with idle hours that are often filled with negative influences and poor role models. Now, more than ever, what your kids do after school is as important as what they do AT school!

The Y-on-Wheels program will provide safe, accessible non-school hour programs in at-risk neighborhoods. The program would be designed to target children between the ages of 5 and 15 in the Wood River Valley. The primary goal of the program will be to provide a healthy, creative, active and safe haven for children who are left alone during after school hours.

The Y-on-Wheels program is modeled on the successful Book Mobile, taking programs and resources to the children rather than having children miss out on learning opportunities because they don't have access to libraries. The Y-on-Wheels brings Y programs and services to the neighborhoods that have the least access (due to transportation and financial constraints) and the greatest need.

Every program experience offered through the Y- on-Wheels includes the 4 core values found at the heart of the YMCA's program philosophy: caring, respect, responsibility and honesty. The curriculum will also include lessons and activities in the fields of: sports, games, races, tutoring assistance, reading programs, guest speakers, team activities, leadership training and violence and drug prevention activities.
